How we handle what you share with us.

Last updated October 26, 2026

What we collect

  • Looking up an address. We don’t store anything about you, except a count of requests from your internet address (IP) to stop people copying the whole tax roll. That count expires within a day. We also keep a log of which parcel pages were viewed, with a scrambled version of the IP that can’t be turned back into it and the type of browser, for 30 days, for the same reason.
  • If you sign up, we keep the owner’s name, phone, email and mailing address; the owner’s date of birth, which we store encrypted; the tax-bill lines we’re filing; and your signed authorization (the name you typed, the time, and your IP).
  • Documents the district needs (the tax bill, proof of age, proof of residence, and the trust’s first page if there is one) are stored privately.

How we use it

  • To file your exemption applications with the district or agency and to tell you how they’re going.
  • To email you your private status link and updates. We send email through Resend.
  • To keep the site working: we host on Vercel and Supabase in the United States, use Upstash to count requests, and Sentry to tell us when something breaks. Error reports have names, emails, phone numbers, addresses and dates of birth removed before they leave.
  • To see how the site is used, we count page views and a handful of steps (for example, that someone answered a question), without names, addresses or cookies. We use PostHog for this.

What we never do

  • We never sell your information.
  • We share it only with the agency we’re filing with.
  • No advertising, no tracking cookies, and no session recording.

How long we keep it

  • Documents are deleted once the district confirms the exemption.
  • Sign-up records are kept for as long as we’re acting for your household and for the following tax year, then deleted.
  • The lookups log is kept for 30 days; request counts expire within a day.

How to ask us to delete it

  • Email hello@checkmytaxes.com or call (408) 599-1766 to ask for a copy of what we hold or for us to delete it.
  • If you live in California, you have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and we honor them on request.
  • This service isn’t for anyone under 18.
  • If we change this policy, the date at the top changes.
